Val d’Isère, in practice
The village and its hamlets
The centre and its immediate surroundings hold most of the apartments, shops and restaurants: almost everything can be done on foot. Upstream, Le Fornet is a hamlet perched at 1,930 metres. Downstream, La Daille is the starting point of the Funival and of several of the main lifts. Other addresses lie in Les Carats, in La Legettaz at the foot of the Solaise massif, and around the Rond-Point des Pistes.
A ski area shared with Tignes
Val d’Isère and Tignes form a single ski area, long known as the Espace Killy and now presented as Tignes – Val d’Isère, with more than 300 kilometres of slopes. On the Val d’Isère side it rises from 1,850 to 3,300 metres and takes in several sectors, from Bellevarde to Solaise and the Pissaillas glacier.
Up to the glacier
The Pissaillas glacier, above Le Fornet, is not reached in a single ride: in winter the Fornet cable car is the first link in a chain of lifts that continues towards the Vallon de l’Iseran and then onto the glacier. It can also be reached from the Solaise sector.
La Face de Bellevarde
At the 1992 Albertville Games the men’s speed events were raced on the Face de Bellevarde, a course drawn by Bernhard Russi. In 2009 the resort hosted the Alpine World Ski Championships, on Bellevarde and Solaise.
On the edge of the Vanoise
The commune borders the Vanoise National Park, France’s first national park, created in 1963. The Col de l’Iseran, the highest road pass in the Alps at 2,770 metres, is closed in winter; usually open from June to October depending on snow, it links the Isère valley with the Maurienne and Bonneval-sur-Arc. The resort also announces a few weeks of summer skiing on the glacier, subject to snow conditions.
Season dates
The resort announces the 2026-2027 winter season from 28 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. These dates may change: only those published by the resort are authoritative.
Choosing where to stay
The centre suits those who want to do everything on foot; Le Fornet and La Daille suit those who would rather set off from a nearby lift. For a family or a group, the layout of bedrooms and bathrooms often matters more than floor area. Each listing sets these out, and MY Concierge can organise the stay around them.
